That's the general rule. All persons within a country's borders are subject to that country's law, whether they are foreigners or nationals. However, there are several exceptions, like treaties and international conventions made between or among countries.

Wait, so what happens if a crime takes place in multiple countries?

Is there another rule for this situation too?

[prosecutory]

As a matter of fact, yes. [He walks back to his seat with the book.] A crime committed on a ship registered at a certain country is prosecuted in that particular country, for example. But if that crime is considered an act of piracy, any country may prosecute it, because it is internationally recognized as a crime.

I see then. People might handle their laws differently, but in the end they all agree on the same thing.
