Wright hasn't told you about Prosecutor Godot - or rather, Diego Armando?

[Edgeworth returns with a tray of tea - cups, pot, and all. He shakes his head in disappointment.]

I'm afraid not.

[He places the tray on the table in front of Franziska and begins pouring out a cup of tea for her.]

No... should he have? Who's he?

One of Wright's opponents in court, but before that, he was a senior colleague of Miss Mia Fey.

Wow, he must be really old if he worked with Miss Mia!

Wait--how can he be Miss Mia's colleague if he's a prosecutor?

[Edgeworth doesn't even chastise Athena for that "old" comment.]

He was a defense attorney before. But when Wright met him, he was already a prosecutor.

[And sure enough, Pess secures victory this time, looking very pleased with himself as he gallops back to Flynn and Edgeworth.]

A little variety is always good. Especially when we have to be resourceful and creative in feeding our dogs here.

[ Evidently he did not level up in social graces while he was gone. ]

[That's okay, Edgeworth still thinks Dipper is a good kid. And it's clear from his voice that he's happy to hear from him again, even though it means Dipper is thrust back into the cereal bowl.]

[He drains the last of his tea.]

Normally, no. It's a long story.

[Edgeworth closes his eyes briefly. Guess he'll have to be the one to tell this sad story, although he can do it candidly because it doesn't concern him much.]

He was in a coma after being poisoned, and became a prosecutor under the alias "Godot" to exact vengeance on Wright. You see, he blamed Wright for being unable to stop Miss Fey's murder.

Well, that's... that's no good. . .

[ there's a thoughtful pause there as she processes that. she knows that mia fey passed away, but she never knew the whole deal with the murder case. ]

But boss wasn't part if it, wasn't he? The murder, I mean... If the news regarding the case was out, then he should have known that boss had nothing to do with it.

No, he wasn't.

[He put his cup down - more gently this time. Then he proceeds to unfold his chessboard and set up the pieces.]

Godot blamed Wright for not protecting Miss Fey on that fateful night. She was important to Godot, so when he awoke from his coma only to realize that she was dead, he directed all his emotions toward beating and humiliating Wright.

[Chibi is about to nudge the other chair out with his foot, but Edgeworth beats him to it. (His reaction time is suffering, as trips into ViViD have shown.) Instead, he just lets a grateful smile spread across his face, though it doesn't quite creep into his eyes.]

You did not. [It takes effort to look back up from his teacup, but he does.] But it is good to see you, despite... Circumstances.

[despite the empty feeling that opens, even with the relatively small time they spent together, as though they'd tangled roots.]

More or less. I guess I just couldn't leave the mystery unsolved. [ But no really, this thought helps him cope with being back. ] Anything crazy happen while I was gone?

[Maya's been out and about with her spirit bird, trying to use her powers to control it. It's a neat little exercise, but unfortunately nothing she's doing is helping it get better, and, with her concentrating so hard, it means she's not paying attention at all to where she's going.]

[So she's right about to crash into Edgeworth. Uh oh]

[Edgeworth probably couldn't leave it unsolved, either.]

Hmm...what was the last phenomenon you remember?

[Edgeworth doesn't comment on Chibi's smile...and instead does his best to smile back, a little. For the both of them.]

And this guy. He likes coffee?

Far too much, I might add. [Look who's talking, tea addict!] He always has a mug when he's in court...and sometimes hurls it at Wright.

[And Edgeworth isn't paying attention to where he's going, either. He's too busy keeping an eye on his ghostly cat in case it ran into more people and took away more of his memories. Thus, he runs straight into Maya himself.

Thankfully Maya's name and identity aren't one of the things he has forgotten.]

Maya! [And automatically:] I'm sorry; a-are you all right?

Hey, Mister Edgeworth... so, this guy throws coffee at the defense, and Franziska whips people. . . did you do anything like that when you were younger?

Once we've finished resting we'll continue our investigation. This is just the beginning!

I'll send you whatever details I can find. [ Oh thank you. She'll gladly have a cup of tea and breathe for a minute. This place sure beats being wherever she was previously. Franziska frowns momentarily after taking some tea in. It's been a tough day and some stress is to be expected. ]
